In June 2023, slugger Pete Alonso and the New York Mets allegedly discussed a long-term deal agreement. The Mets made a seven-year, $158 million offer through Alonso’s agency, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post. First baseman Matt Olson of the Atlanta Braves inked an eight-year, $168 million contract to remain with the team before the 2022 season, and Sherman mentioned that Olson’s signing had an impact on the transaction. But no deal was struck, and Alonso will still be able to enter unrestricted free agency in 2025. According to Sherman, the two parties “never got close to a deal” despite the alleged offer, which is why Alonso’s trade negotiations with the Chicago Cubs were discussed by the front office of New York in July.

Alonso told Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic that he’s “not particularly thinking about” free agency during the season, suggesting that he is not concerned about his unclear future. “We’ll watch the winter situation. It’s really unclear,” he continued. “For me, right now, I’m just focusing on doing what I can to help us win every day.” Despite having a great April, the Mets have faltered and now sit at No. 4 in the NL East with a 20–24 record.
