The ‘Century Red’ jerseys that the New York Giants have shown aren’t particularly impressive.
The New York Giants unveiled their, um, festive “Century Red” outfits on Thursday morning as they get ready to play in their 100th NFL season. Furthermore, they are — what else? The G-Men will don a mash-up of looks from their history, painstakingly evaluating what’s essentially a Frankenstein throwback over the previous two years. The tan pants date back to New York’s inaugural 1925 season. They resemble the ones the Green Bay Packers have occasionally worn with throwback jerseys in recent years. The 1933 jersey and socks, which were worn by the Giants in their first NFL championship game loss to the Chicago Bears, resemble items that were stolen from the Montreal Canadiens. (It’s unlikely that supporters of the New York Rangers will purchase these?)
The Giants will, at last, adopt the winged helmet that was first used from 1937 to 1947. Indeed, it resembles Michigan’s headgear in essence, but with red and blue instead of maize and blue.
Giants linebacker Bobby Okereke remarked in a team statement, “I feel like it’s gritty and vintage.” NFL STATS CENTRAL: Up-to-date NFL schedules, stats, odds, and more. It’s reminiscent of the gloomy times of the 1920s and 1930s when they were first emerging. It is a tribute to all of the previous players. They made it possible for us to enjoy this fantastic game.”
