Former SEC quarterback scores a touchdown in the UFL against a former Tennessee Vols tight end.
Players now have a fantastic chance to show off their skills outside of the traditional autumn football that fans have grown accustomed to watching thanks to the UFL. For one former Tennessee Volunteer, who made a huge play on Saturday during the DC Defenders’ game against the St. Louis Battlehawks, that has proven to be the case. The Defenders seized the lead when former Tennessee tight end Alex Ellis caught a pass from former Ole Miss quarterback Jordan Ta’amu and scampered into the end zone.
Ellis was a Tennessee player from 2011 till 2015. During his tenure at Knoxville, he totaled 14 receptions for 232 yards, all of which came in his final two years. In the Vols’ 45-6 victory over the Wildcats in the Outback Bowl, he recorded career highs in yards (74) and catches (3). That was his greatest game as a Vol.
Ellis has made an effort to stay in the NFL, but thus far he hasn’t been successful. He signed with the Tennessee Titans after going undrafted in the 2016 NFL Draft, however he was cut after failing to make the 53-man roster. In the end, he was added to the active rosters of the Philadelphia Eagles, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Kansas City Chiefs, where he played in games for all three teams in 2017, 2018, and 2019, respectively.
Ellis scored four touchdowns for DC in the UFL last season, which was second most on the squad. The goal he scored on Sunday was his first of 2024. If the former Vol can figure out a way back onto an NFL squad, we’ll find out this fall.
