Vols Conclude Season With 10th-Place Finish at NCAA Championships
CARLSBAD, California: At the NCAA Championships, the fifth-ranked Tennessee men’s golf team finished in tenth place, capping an incredible season. Eight top-four team finishes characterized Tennessee’s 2023–24 season, which was capped off with three team event victories and a tied first-place result in stroke play at the SEC Championships. “This week’s outcome is obviously not what we were hoping for,” head coach Brennan Webb remarked. “(I) couldn’t be more proud of this team and what they have fought for this year and how much they fought through a bunch of adversity, how much they have grown as a team and individually.”
Even up until this day, they were still fighting. Many times, we have been written off. After the initial round, (we) were written off. In January, we were definitely written off. These people, they never gave up fighting and persevered till the very end. There is a narrow path to success. Over the course of 16 rounds of golf, we will miss by three shots. Bryce Lewis finished as Tennessee’s highest finisher in his final tournament as a Vol, shooting 7-over and tying for 35th. Lewis opened the event with a 78, then proceeded to a 71 in the second round and two 73s in the third and fourth rounds. With rounds of 74, 75, 74, and 73, Evan Woosley-Reed tied for 42nd place and shot 8 over for the event, good for Tennessee’s second-highest finisher. Woosley-Reed shot a 1-over 73 by holeing out for eagle on his 18th hole in the final round. Lance Simpson, a redshirt sophomore, finished the NCAA Championships in a tie for 49th place. In round four, redshirt senior Jake Hall tied for 53rd place with a 1-under 71, capping out his final collegiate competition. The native of Knoxville, Tennessee, shot three counting rounds for the Vols and finished with an 11-over total after four rounds. Bruce Murphy, a redshirt freshman, tied for 72nd place after shooting a final-round 72 to end the event at 15 over.
